A Creative Retreat In San Francisco’s Bayview, $1.6M

The Bayview home of celebrated and much published designer/artist Antonio Martins is on the market. Once the workshop and home of plaster artisan and sculptor Cesare Santini in the 1920s, Martins acquired the property in 2017 (you can see its previous incarnation at Curbed SF) and proceeded to restore and embellish the upstairs residential space.

He later transformed the extensive ground floor—once the Santini workshop—into a garage, gallery and entertaining space furnished with salvage materials and found objects in conversation with classic works, reflecting a global and historicist aesthetic. It’s a theme that runs throughout the 3-bed, 1.5-bath property, a welcome contrast to the antiseptic and minimalist staged properties on the market

Martins’ frequent collaborators Katherine Jacobus and Linda Hornung executed the magical entry hall mural leading up to the residential level, echoing the blue and white tile walls that celebrate Martins’ Portuguese heritage.

Meanwhile, upstairs there’s a rogues gallery of cravatted gentlemen in the living room, a lavish bedroom, and a dining room full of contrasting forms and objects under Droog Design’s classic 85 Chandelier, all informed by Martins’ incredible eye.
