Well, that was quick. A classic-but-modest Hollywood stucco cottage—that was built in the 1920s and reworked over the years into a romantic compound and witty work of art—has sold for $21K over asking pirce in just twelve days. Previously owned by the actor Christopher Lloyd, its original transformation was guided by artist Robert DeYoung who was well known in the 1980s for his fanciful and evocative residential designs that noted influences from Mexico to Mykonos. The seller was Dawn Zappa, who during her tenure there was responsible for carefully reviving the interior and exterior spaces of this deeply personal dwelling. With exposed timbers and whitewashed walls, the intimate walled and gated property has two ensuite bedrooms opening to the outdoors, a two-story guest house and a pool set in quarried coral stone.

There are a total of five fireplaces, all rebuilt during Zappa’s ownership, along with new HVAC and an upgraded electrical systems. One artifact of Lloyd’s tongue-in-cheek tenancy is a real-life mask of his face, gilded in plaster and embedded in an exterior wall. The house remains a testament to the crazy, creative threads of the 1980s and L.A.’s longstanding tradition of refined BoHo chic.
