After years of renovating houses and raising three children in Malibu, the owners (he’s a lawyer, she’s an architect) chose Lake Flato Architecture, the award-winning San Antonio firm known for its commitment to sustainability to build their family a house in Malibu’s Point Dume neighborhood. After renovating and living in so many houses, the couple had a clear understanding of how they wanted to live; the architects responded with a series of structures clustered around outdoor spaces centered on a soaring main structure containing the principal rooms and a group of independent guest quarters for their now-grown offspring. Just as important as a very high level of design with privacy and flexibility, the owners required extensive sports amenities, which include a sleek 60-ft lap pool and spa, a clay tennis court and a basketball/pickleball court, a traditional Finnish sauna and an outdoor shower.
