It’s a California dream—a self-sufficient and sustainable place in the hills of Sonoma County, with just enough of a vineyard to make some wine and an organic garden for produce, room for friends and entertaining, all set in world-class architecture.
Built in 2002, this particular dream compound, with structures connected together by outdoor spaces, include the 3200-square-foott, 3-bed, 2.5-bath, 2-office primary dwelling, a 600-square-foot, 1-bed, 1-bath guest house, plus a Corten steel-clad garage, studio and wine-making lab. The now-mature vineyard was designed by noted winemaker Carlo Indindoli, and comprises both Grenache and a variety of red grapes. Cathi and Steven House of the eponymous House + House Architects are the visionaries behind this dreamscape, pulling together the many strands of inspiration embedded in their practice– the complexity and surprise of Mediterranean hilltop villages, the work of Mexican architect Luis Barragan, a love of deep color, and the goal of conscious sustainability throughout their projects. Based in San Francisco, House + House has a global practice, with completed projects all over the world and dozens of awards, plus CASA, the Center for Architecture Sustainability + Art, a summer study program that blends architecture, sustainability, and art in the Mexican city and Unesco World Heritage Site, San Miguel de Allende.
