One of the best-known of the Southern California historicist architects, Reginald Davis Johnson (1882–1952) created some of the most beautiful dwellings in and around Pasadena, as well as further north in Santa Barbara and Montecito. Johnson’s projects always possess a confidence and assuredness in the styles in which he worked and this recreation of an Italian villa in Pasadena is no exception. Built in 1917 and occupied by a series of Pasadena grandees over the decades, it’s known locally as the Tanner-Behr House. Acquired in 1998 by clothing designer and manufacturer Richard Tyler and his wife Lisa Trafficante, this splendid suburban palazzo came on the market this week, an estate reflecting decades of superb taste and stewardship.
