With her unerring eye for color and style, Trina Turk has built a clothing and lifestyle brand unlike any other in Southern California. Founded with her late husband, photographer/stylist/menswear designer Jonathan Skow, their partnership translated a glamorous leisure-centric mid-century aesthetic into clothing and textiles, including Turk’s recent collaboration with Schumacher. They also occupied a unique niche as collectors and conservators of architecture—undertaking the restoration of John Lautner’s Salkin House in Echo Park. Here, dubbed Soleil House, is her first spec project, a desert dwelling originally designed in 1963 by Pasadena architect Howard Bissner, and occupying a magical site overlooking Palm Springs. The house had fallen into disrepair and has been substantially reconfigured while retaining all its 1960s allure, and there’s a fascinating series of videos documenting the project and the thinking behind every decision.
Turk opened the living room floor to accomodate a sunken seating area, expanding the view.
Turk enlarged the dark kitchen at the back of the house, opening it up to the dining area, with expanses of glass—exposing the rocky hillside just a few feet away. Her effortless style is evident throughout the house.
