Robert Arrigoni’s Masterpiece in Wood, $10M

Angelo Sangiacomo —born in San Francisco’s Richmond District and the son of Italian immigrants—rose to become one the City’s largest landlords, developing dozens of rental properties during his long (and occasionally contentious) career. When it came time to build a home for his family, he had the vision to hire emerging architect Robert Arrigoni, a founding partner of BAR Architects, a firm that would develop its own unique style over the decades in wood and masonry, building a portfolio of dozens of of private homes, vineyard properties, and major commissions like George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch in Marin County.

It was 1970, and what Arrigoni produced is a synthesis of vernacular Northern California architecture, contemporaneous with the timber-based, Post-Modernism of The Sea Ranch and the raw concrete of Brutalism, all the while looking back at the shingled volumes of the First Bay Tradition. The impeccably crafted home he built for the Sangiacomo family represents a very particular moment in time—but fifty years on—remains eminently liveable. Set on the curve of Edgehill Way like a shingled parabola with views of the Pacific, the 5-level home contains a total of eight bedrooms—an extensive primary suite and four family bedrooms, plus two very private en-suites on a lower level, handy for guests, staff or offices. The entertaining spaces are distributed throughout the soaring interior spaces, supported by raw concrete columns and a poured concrete structure, exposed in places by the all-enveloping wood interior. All levels are connected by an elevator, but with its soaring columns and overhanging balconies, there’s a bit of Piranesi’s etchings here as well.
